At Storageland undercover vehicle storage is one of the most frequently enquired about services. Whether it is for your car, boat or caravan it is often hard to find secure quality storage for these valuable possessions. Putting your car in a storage unit for the long term needs planning and preparation. You must try to do this properly if you want to find your valuable possession in the best possible condition when you return.
Here are some hints that might be useful.
Clean Your Car
You don’t want to retrieve your car and find it smelling of year old burgers or a well baked gym bag so make sure that you clean the car inside and out. Remove all rubbish from the interior and avoid the temptation to use it as a storage space. Vacuum and wash and the interior. You might also want to leave a deodorizer inside to keep the interior smelling good. With the exterior, wash and then wax the outside of the vehicle, clean the windows (inside and out), as well as the windscreen and lights. When you put the car in storage cover it with a well fitted breathable cover and make sure the cover is well secured. Covers are readily available from many sources including our store.
Service Your Car
Before you put your car into long term storage, make sure you have a mechanic check it or go for a regular service. Your mechanic should be able to offer you valuable advice about preparing your car for storage and might tailor the service accordingly. It is wise to change the engine oil and filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid etc. You should also charge the battery to its fullest capacity and then disconnect the cables so that the power is not drained off. Check the tyres for wear and tear and fill them up with air. When storing the vehicle in the storage unit you may want to put it on jacks so that your tyres don’t get flat spots. If you are leaving your car fuelled, make sure you add a fuel stabilizing substance to prevent the collection of moisture in the fuel.
Shut the Windows, Lock the Doors
When you leave your car make sure that it is securely locked and the windows are shut tight. If you do have items in the vehicle make sure they are out of view. Most importantly, make sure you take the keys with you before you lock the car and ensure the keys are put somewhere they can be found.
Have Your Paperwork in Order
Whether you bought the car first hand or second hand, make sure you have the adequate paperwork to show the purchase or transfer of ownership. Check when your registration expires as it may be cheaper to renew it than to have to re-register your car. Speak to your insurers and see if there are any special considerations and / or savings on your insurance while your car is in storage.
