There are many reasons for using self storage, downsizing is just one. If you are thinking of downsizing here are some tips which might be of use.
Among the many reasons for downsizing it maybe your current home is just too large and requires too much maintenance or maybe it is an economic decision to free up your equity or reduce your weekly rental bill. Regardless self storage gives you options to retain valuable possessions, avoid living in clutter and save some money. Moving to a smaller space requires thought and planning. The first thing you should ask yourself when downsizing is where is all my possessions going to go. It may be that you want to use a storage unit as an interim measure for none essential items so that when you move into your new home you have the luxury planning and measuring rooms and ensuring that what you envision will fit, will actually fit.
Some compromises may have to be made. For example, your King bed may be just too large and while it may fit into the new room along with your other bedroom furniture there may not be room to freely move around and function comfortably. It might be time to look for a Queen sized bed. Maybe a guest bedroom can be replaced by a multipurpose room (study, TV room or living room) with a fold out couch or futon replacing a bed. Reduce the amount of wardrobe and dresser space by taking a good critical look at your clothing towels and manchester. If you have things that have not been used for a year or more ask yourself if they are really worth keeping? Things of reasonable quality can be donated; the rest can be disposed of. Use the height of rooms for storage. One tall dresser might replace two smaller ones, same with bookshelves. Also put shelves up higher. The most under-utilized space in most homes is under the bed. There are many under bed storage systems including small flat plastic totes that are perfect storage compartments to fit under any bed and free up closet space. Extra hooks on the interior and exterior of wardrobe doors can also free up valuable space for clothing and other items.
Once you have organised your new home into a comfortable, liveable space you may still be faced with a surplus of belongings. This is where a self-storage unit can be invaluable. Of course Storageland or any other storage provider will rent you a unit of any size you desire but even so now is the time to reduce your costs by taking a critical look at your remaining possessions. Are there things of value which you will never use again? It might be a lawnmower or the like if you have moved into an apartment. Such items can be sold via eBay or Gumtree and turned it into cash. Things that really are rubbish should be disposed of. There is no point paying to store them. Once these decisions are made you can store your remaining possessions comfortable in the knowledge that you are preserving your valuables without wasting money.
